The most common female disorders are Menstrual irregularities, Thyroid and Migraine. Let’s understand them in some depth to remove myths related to these diseases from your mind.
Menstrual Irregularities :
For almost every women, a normal menstrual cycle ranges from 21 to 35 days. However, 14 to 25% of women have irregular menstrual cycles, which means that the cycles are shorter or longer than normal / are heavier or lighter than normal / or are experienced with other problems, like abdominal cramps. Irregular menstrual cycles can be ovulatory (ovulation occurs) or anovulatory (ovulation does not occur).
The menstrual cycle is a monthly series of changes inside woman’s body which goes through in preparation for the possibility of pregnancy. Each month, one of the ovaries releases an egg to maintain body in a position to start a process called ovulation. At the same time, hormonal changes prepare the uterus for pregnancy.
Irregular cycles or irregular periods is an abnormal variation in the length of menstrual cycles. A female usually experiences cycle length variations up to eight days between the shortest and longest cycle lengths. Lengths ranging between eight and 20 days are considered moderately irregular. Variation of 21 days or more is considered very irregular.
Alternatively, a single menstruation period may be defined as irregular if it is shorter than 21 days or longer than 36 days. If the cycles are regularly shorter than 21 days or longer than 36 (or 35) days, the condition is termed polymenorrhea or oligomenorrhea, respectively.
Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD):
It’s also known as Polycystic Ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a very common condition affecting 5% to 10% of women in the age group 12–45 years. It is a problem in which a woman’s hormones are out of balance. It can cause problems with menstrual periods and make it difficult for her to conceive.
The principal features include no ovulation, irregular periods, acne and hirsuitism. If not treated it can cause insulin resistant diabetes, obesity and high cholesterol leading to heart disease.
Thyroid :
The disease women thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck. It produces hormones that control the speed of your metabolism called as the system that helps our body to use energy. Thyroid disorders can slow down or rev up metabolism by disrupting the production of thyroid hormones.
According to medical research on thyroid women are more likely than men to have thyroid disease. One in eight women will develop thyroid problems during her lifetime. In women, thyroid diseases can cause following health problems:
-
- Menstrual period problem : Your thyroid helps control your menstrual cycle. Too much or too little thyroid hormone can make your periods very light, heavy, or irregular. Thyroid disease also can create a condition called amenorrhea which cause your periods to stop for several months or longer. If your body’s immune system causes thyroid disease, then other glands in your body may gets affected and this can lead to early menopause (before age 40).
- Problems in getting pregnant : When thyroid disease affects the menstrual cycle, it also affects ovulation and this can make it harder for you to get pregnant.
- Problems during pregnancy : During pregnancy if thyroid problems occur in mother then, it can cause health problems for both mother and the baby.
Sometimes, symptoms of thyroid problems are mistaken for menopause symptoms. Thyroid disease, especially hypothyroidism, is more likely to develop after menopause.
Uterine Fibroids:
Fibroids are muscular tumors that grow in the wall of the uterus (womb). Another medical term for fibroids is leiomyoma or just “myoma”. Fibroids are almost always benign (not cancerous). Fibroids can grow as a single tumor, or there can be many of them in the uterus. They can be as small as an apple seed or as big as a grapefruit. In unusual cases they can become very large.
Not all women with fibroids have symptoms. Women who do have symptoms often find fibroids hard to live with. Some have pain and heavy menstrual bleeding. Treatment for uterine fibroids depends on your symptoms.
Migraine :
In migraine women report episodic pain and chronic pain more frequently than men. Due to changes in estrogen levels more severe and more frequent migraine attacks often result in women. Medical research has connected hormones to migraine, but not all migraines are hormonal.
More than half of migraines in women occur right before, during, or after a woman has her period. This often is called “menstrual migraine.” The drop in hormones may trigger a migraine, because estrogen controls chemicals in the brain that affect a woman’s pain sensation.
